Hotel in Finland – RockStripes integrated into concrete elements

Levin Utsuvaaran Gielas is a modern mountain project in Levi, Finland, where architecture, material selection and execution are carefully adapted to the demanding Nordic climate conditions. Located over 500 meters above sea level, the project combines ski-in/ski-out qualities with high architectural precision and durable materials.
Complete facade solution with RockStripes
In this project , RockStripes from Alta Quartzite's Sustainability Center are used as an integrated part of prefabricated concrete elements . The stones were installed in the elements already at the factory, under professional guidance from Stonegroup Finland , which ensured correct execution, precise stone placement and high, consistent quality.
The stone layout and expression have been developed in close collaboration with architect Juha Paananen (Arkkijussi Oy) , where the interaction between natural stone, concrete and architecture has been a central premise in the project's visual identity.
RockStripes is produced from surplus material from the slate production in Alta and represents a circular and resource-efficient solution. The combination of Norwegian natural stone and prefabricated concrete elements provides a robust facade system with a long lifespan, high resistance to weather and temperature variations, and low maintenance requirements.
Architecture, precision and execution
The precast concrete elements with integrated RockStripes give the facades depth, structure and a distinct Nordic expression. The solution is particularly well suited for projects in high mountain climates, where the requirements for tolerances, durability and efficient installation are high.
A total of around 600 m² of stone-clad concrete elements were delivered to the project. Construction was completed in 2024 , and the project today stands as a good example of how natural stone can be incorporated into industrial building systems without losing its architectural character.

Levin Utsuvaaran Gielas shows how Norwegian natural stone, sustainable production and prefabricated solutions can be combined into a holistic, durable and architecturally strong project in demanding Nordic environments.
Natural slate is one of the most durable building materials available. Properly used, slate can last for generations with minimal maintenance.
100% natural
Alta Quartzite is a pure natural material with no additives. Each stone is unique, shaped by nature over millions of years.
Sustainable
Long lifespan, low maintenance and minimal processing make slate a sustainable choice from a life cycle perspective.
Up to 100% recyclable
Slate can be reused or recycled after use, without losing the material's properties.
