Cabin in Gol – rugged rock outcrops in Alta Quartzite

This cabin in Gol shows how large, durable broken slabs of Alta Quartzite can be used to create robust and durable outdoor areas around a traditional mountain cabin. With large surfaces and varying loads, strict requirements are placed on both material quality, structure and execution.
Here, Alta Quartzite was chosen for its strength, natural surface and ability to function equally well throughout the year – from summer use to demanding winter conditions.
Large fracture slabs – functional zones of different character
The project uses large, broken slabs of Alta Quartzite , adapted for both driving and traffic. The slabs are laid with deliberate variation in joint type, based on load and use:
- High-traffic zones with grass in the joints provide both high load-bearing capacity and a green, vibrant appearance. The solution combines function with a natural feel that blends well into the landscape.
- Non-traffic zones with gravel in the joints give a calmer look and work well in walkways and living areas with lower traffic.
This differentiated use of joints provides clear functional division, while at the same time making the whole feel natural and well-crafted.
Cottage, landscape and details
The large quarry slabs follow the contours of the terrain and give the outdoor areas an irregular, site-specific expression that harmonizes well with traditional cottage architecture. The slate's natural surface provides good grip and high wear resistance, even in areas exposed to the weather.
The transition between the cabin, patio and surrounding nature is solved with respect for the landscape, where the slate connects the building and the terrain in a lasting and discreet way.

- Location: Gol, Norway
- Products from Alta Quartzite:
Large, hard-to-drive broken slabs - Execution of slate work: Landscape Gardener East
The project at Gol is a clear example of how Norwegian slate from Alta Quartzite can be used in cabin projects with high demands on both load-bearing capacity, function and aesthetics.
Natural slate is one of the most durable building materials available. Properly used, slate can last for generations with minimal maintenance.
100% natural
Alta Quartzite is a pure natural material with no additives. Each stone is unique, shaped by nature over millions of years.
Sustainable
Long lifespan, low maintenance and minimal processing make slate a sustainable choice from a life cycle perspective.
Up to 100% recyclable
Slate can be reused or recycled after use, without losing the material's properties.
