Cabin in Geilo – Alta Quartzite in the high mountains
This cabin in Geilo is a good example of how Alta Quartzite can be used holistically in high mountain terrain to create robust, functional and timeless outdoor areas. Being located in an open mountain landscape, high demands are placed on the choice of materials, both in terms of durability, slip resistance and the ability to withstand large weather and temperature fluctuations.
Here, Alta Quartzite is used consistently around the cabin to anchor the building in the landscape and create a natural transition between architecture and terrain.
Holistic use of Alta Quartzite
In the project, several products from Alta Quartzite are combined to cover various functions in the outdoor areas:
- Square roofing slates are used as stepping and walking areas in grass, where the stone leaves a light but clear footprint in the terrain and allows vegetation to play an active role between the slabs.
- Stepping stones in a format of 60 × 40 cm are used as access and connections between different zones around the cabin. The format provides a neat structure, while the natural surface ensures good grip in wet and wintry conditions.
- Outdoor tiles in 30 cm falling lengths , 2 cm thick, are used close to the cabin and in living areas. The falling length gives a lively expression and a traditional feel, well suited to cabin architecture in the mountains.
Overall, these solutions provide great flexibility in design, while keeping the material palette consistent and calm.
Architecture, terrain and details
The outdoor areas are designed with respect for the surrounding landscape, where the slate follows the lines of the terrain and contributes to a natural integration between the cabin and its surroundings. The combination of open spaces, grass stepping zones and fixed walking areas provides both functionality and a light expression, without dominating the nature.
The bright colors and natural structure of the Alta Quartzite match the wood in the cabin well and reinforce the classic but timeless high mountain expression.
