Cabin in Geilo – natural wall, RockWall and large boulders

This cabin in Geilo is a perfect example of how Alta Quartzite can be used to create a robust, timeless and exclusive expression in high mountain terrain. Natural stone is used for both retaining walls, natural walls, cladding of walls and outdoor areas , and seamlessly connects the building with the terrain.

All natural stone work in the project was carried out by Anleggsgartner Øst .

Alta Quartzite RockWall – blinding on walls

Alta Quartzite RockWall has been used as a cladding on walls and surfaces close to buildings. RockWall gives the appearance of traditional drywall, but is adapted to modern constructions and efficient installation.

Advantages of RockWall as a wall cladding:

  •  Distinct natural stone character and depth
  •  Very robust and maintenance-free solution
  •  Harmonious interaction with wooden architecture and terrain

RockWall gives the building a solid foundation both visually and architecturally.

Natural wall and retaining wall in Alta Quartzite

The project makes extensive use of natural walls and retaining walls in Alta Quartzite to secure terrain and level differences. The walls are built with a focus on correct dimensioning, stability and natural drainage – crucial factors in high mountain areas like Geilo.

 The natural walls:

  •  Follows the contours of the terrain
  •  Gives a vibrant and exclusive brick look
  •  Withstands frost, frost and large temperature fluctuations

Large broken slabs 2–3 cm – adjusted in place

In the entrance areas and outdoor living areas , large broken slabs of Alta Quartzite, 2–3 cm thick , have been used, where each individual slab has been adapted and placed in place by Anleggsgartner Øst . This gives a true artisanal expression and great flexibility in design.

 The fractured slabs provide:

  •  Natural, non-slip surface
  •  Large, quiet surfaces with few joints
  •  A timeless expression that ages beautifully

Adaptation on site provides maximum precision in meeting the building's geometry and the natural movements of the terrain.

Complete outdoor facility in Norwegian natural stone

The natural stone frames the cabin and creates clear transitions between:

  •  Courtyard and access
  •  Entrances
  •  Terrain and vegetation

The result is a functional and visually strong outdoor facility, well adapted to both use and surroundings.

Sustainable material choice for the high mountains

Alta Quartzite is a short-lived, Norwegian natural stone with a very long lifespan. The material requires minimal maintenance and has a low climate footprint over the life of the building – a natural choice for cabins in mountainous areas like Geilo.
