Aosta, Switzerland - Pitched roof in alpine landscape

This project in the Aosta Valley in Switzerland shows how slate roofs with Altaheller tiles in thicknesses of 18–35 mm provide a robust, durable and site-adapted roof in a demanding alpine climate. The building is located high in the terrain, surrounded by steep mountain slopes, severe weather conditions and significant snow and wind loads.
The choice of Alta Quartzite was made based on the stone's documented strength, low water absorption and long lifespan – properties that are crucial in high mountain areas.
Traditional craftsmanship – modern quality
Roofing with large, hand-sorted Alta tiles gives a vibrant and natural expression, while the construction meets modern requirements for safety and durability. The variation in stone thickness contributes to both visual depth and increased weight, which is especially important in weather-exposed areas.
The slate roof follows traditional Alpine building practices, where natural stone has been the preferred roofing material for centuries – now continued with high-quality Norwegian slate .
Adapted to demanding conditions
Alta schist is particularly suitable for alpine environments because it:
- withstands large temperature fluctuations
- has high resistance to frost and moisture
- provides long life with minimal maintenance
The result is a roof that both functions technically and supports the building's architectural and landscape anchoring.
Project information
- Project: Slate roof in Aosta
- Location: Aosta Valley, Switzerland
- Product: Altar tiles for roofs, 18–35 mm
- Application: Traditional slate roof in alpine high mountain environment
This project in Aosta is a good example of how Alta Quartzite can be used internationally in demanding environments, where the combination of natural beauty, technical performance and longevity is crucial.
Natural slate is one of the most durable building materials available. Properly used, slate can last for generations with minimal maintenance.
100% natural
Alta Quartzite is a pure natural material with no additives. Each stone is unique, shaped by nature over millions of years.
Sustainable
Long lifespan, low maintenance and minimal processing make slate a sustainable choice from a life cycle perspective.
Up to 100% recyclable
Slate can be reused or recycled after use, without losing the material's properties.
