Old Aker Church – respectful renovation with Alta Quartzite

Old Aker Church, Oslo's oldest standing building, has chosen Alta Quartzite tiles with a natural surface in connection with the upgrade of the interior and access – a material choice that harmonizes naturally with the church's historical expression and robust stone architecture.

The project uses Alta Quartzite tiles in a format of 60 × 30 cm and 15 mm thick , laid with precision to ensure both aesthetics, function and universal design. The natural surface provides a calm, timeless expression and a non-slip surface that is well suited for a building with high use and great cultural and historical value.

Steps have also been supplied in the same material , ensuring a holistic and seamless transition between levels and surfaces. The transition between floors, steps and existing masonry has been solved with great respect for the church's original construction and use of materials.

The choice of Norwegian slate from Alta underlines the project's focus on durability, quality and historical continuity. Alta Quartzite is known for its extreme durability and long lifespan, and has been used in Norwegian church buildings for generations – a natural choice for this project as well.

The old Aker Church today has an upgraded stone floor that both preserves the building's history and meets modern requirements for use, safety and quality.
