Pæska, 15 kilometres outside of Alta
The quartzite findings in Alta are among the world's largest recorded findings of quartzite. We have been extracting slate from quarries in Alta since the 1850s. The quarry is conveniently located not far from Altafjorden. This made it possibe 150 years ago to transport the Alta Quartzite by sea to other parts of the the country - and eventually to the whole world.
The quartzite industry has had great historical significance for the local community in Alta. At its peak there were 600-700 people - entire families - who had it as their workplace. Today there are around 100 people who work in the quarry.
